Oulu and the Pohjola Route Win “Best Destination for Sustainable Tourism” at the Today’s Traveller Awards
We are thrilled to announce that Oulu and the Pohjola Route have been recognized as the Best Destination for Sustainable Tourism at the Today’s Traveller Awards 2023 in New Delhi, India. This award celebrates our commitment to sustainable tourism, environmental stewardship, and the preservation of Finland’s natural beauty.
The Today’s Traveller Awards recognize leaders in travel and tourism who have set new benchmarks in excellence, and we are honored to be part of such a distinguished group. The award was presented in recognition of the Pohjola Route’s innovative approach to tourism, which highlights the scenic beauty and cultural richness of the Oulu region while promoting environmentally responsible travel. This route offers visitors a chance to explore Finland’s arctic landscapes, coastal wonders, and forests, all while ensuring minimal impact on the environment.
When presenting the award, the judges praised our dedication to balancing tourism development with sustainability goals, specifically mentioning our efforts in promoting eco-friendly travel options, including cycling and public transportation along the Pohjola Route. They also recognized Oulu’s role in shaping Finland’s reputation as a leader in sustainable tourism, particularly as the city gears up to become the European Capital of Culture 2026.
This achievement would not have been possible without the hard work of the entire Visit Oulu team, our partners, and the incredible support from the City of Oulu. We are incredibly proud to see our sustainability initiatives recognized on such a global platform and look forward to continuing our efforts to promote Oulu as a year-round destination that prioritizes sustainability.
Receiving this award also shines a spotlight on the importance of sustainable tourism as a key driver for future growth. With the increasing awareness and demand for responsible travel, destinations like Oulu are paving the way for a new era of tourism that benefits local communities while protecting our natural and cultural heritage.
Thank you to Today’s Traveller for this wonderful recognition, and we look forward to welcoming more visitors to experience the Pohjola Route and the beauty of Northern Finland in a sustainable and meaningful way.
