Finding the Center Path: Reflections on the Travel Forum

As I sit down to reflect on the Pohjois-Pohjanmaa (Northern Finland) Matkailufoorumi, our recent travel forum in Oulu, I am struck by the passion and perspectives shared both during and after the event. The conversations sparked at the forum—about connectivity, sustainability, and the balance we must strike as a community—are proof that these are issues that matter deeply to many of us. Matters we need to address.

Most of the feedback from the Matkailufoorumi was overwhelmingly positive. The event sparked engaging discussions, highlighted key opportunities for growth, and brought together diverse voices passionate about the future of travel and sustainability. However, some criticism also emerged, particularly around topics like flight connections and the use of AI-generated images.

Connectivity vs. Sustainability

One of the central themes of the criticism following the forum was the focus on flight connections to Oulu. Some argued that we should prioritize alternative modes of transport like trains or even bikes. These criticisms are valid in that they highlight the need for sustainable travel solutions. Trains, with their significantly lower carbon footprint, are an excellent alternative for short and medium distances. However, they cannot be the sole solution for a city like Oulu.

Oulu is not just a travel destination; it’s a hub of innovation, technical expertise, and community growth. Its connectivity to the world is crucial for the people who live and work here. The infrastructure and investments that support our local economy depend on fast and reliable transportation. Lengthy train rides, while preferable in many ways, do not meet the needs of every traveler, nor do they facilitate the type of global engagement that sustains our community. Air travel remains a necessity—not as a luxury, but as a lifeline to the world.

This is where I believe we need to find a balanced approach. Promoting train travel where it makes sense while maintaining flight connections that ensure Oulu remains accessible is not an either-or question. It’s about ensuring that connectivity supports our people while minimizing the environmental impact wherever possible.

The Role of AI and Technology in Storytelling

Another unexpected point of criticism was directed at the use of AI-generated images to visually depict themes from the forum. Some argued that the energy used to create these images contradicted the forum’s sustainability goals, equating it to the environmental impact of charging a smartphone.

Ironically, many of these criticisms were posted from mobile phones or computers—devices that themselves consume energy. This brings us to a larger conversation about technology, perception, and balance. AI tools, when used responsibly, can enhance storytelling and provide innovative ways to engage with content. The energy used to create these images is part of a broader digital ecosystem, and it is worth questioning not only the energy consumption of the tools we use but how we use them to add value to the discussions we are having.

The criticism also highlights a growing tension in the sustainability debate: how to weigh the costs of innovation against its benefits. Should we abandon tools that are resource-intensive, or should we embrace them as part of a broader effort to make those tools and systems more sustainable? My belief is that technology—AI included—can be a powerful ally in advancing sustainable practices if used thoughtfully.

Sustainability as Balance

At the heart of these conversations lies the true essence of sustainability. Sustainability is not just about the environment; it is a balance between environmental stewardship, social equity, and economic growth. It is about protecting the planet while supporting the communities that call it home. It is about making decisions that serve the present without compromising the future.

This balance is not easy to achieve. It requires us to listen to different perspectives, to question assumptions, and to seek solutions that acknowledge the complexity of the world we live in. Sustainability is not about choosing one extreme over another—it’s about finding the center path.

Collaboration

I deeply appreciate the dedication and resilience of our local entrepreneurs, who face numerous challenges in striving to make their businesses successful. Their passion and commitment are the backbone of our community, and their efforts contribute significantly to the vibrancy and growth of our city. I firmly believe that by fostering collaboration and open dialogue, we can work together to create a better destination—one that not only attracts visitors but also enriches the lives of those who call Oulu home. Together, we can build a community that thrives on shared success, sustainability, and innovation.

Looking Forward

The Matkailufoorumi reminded me of the importance of dialogue. Criticism, even when uncomfortable, is a sign that people care. It challenges us to think deeply about our choices and pushes us to do better. I am grateful for the discussions sparked by the forum and for the opportunity to reflect on what sustainability means for Oulu, for our community, and for myself.

As we move forward, I hope we can continue to find that balance. Let’s support the connections that sustain our city, embrace innovation that helps us tell our story, and work together to build a future that is truly sustainable—for the environment, for the people, and for the economy.

Thank you to everyone who shared their thoughts, ideas, and criticisms. They are all part of this journey toward a better, more balanced world.
